For many people this is just a little bit too much to ’play around with’.
Luckily, there are also many free applications out there that can do the same kind of job that Photoshop could do for you. This article rounds up the best 15 free Mac Programs for Graphic Designers. GIMP

If you need to animate one of your photos or designs, this program is for you. It’s compatible with a wide array of programs, and in addition to animating images, it can also perform minor tweaks to contrast, sharpening, smoothing, filters, and more. It also analyzes particles, angles, and paths.
Scratch
This program is so simple, it can be used also immediately with no prior instruction. It is used for creating small games, interactive art, and animated stories, and is primarily marketed to children. Installing Mavericks inside a virtual machine is fairly easy, but there are a few tricks to be aware of if you’re on a newer Mac. Credit to Natsuki’s post for sharing how to get the Mavericks installer to run on Apple computers with Intel Haswell CPU’s. iesd is a Ruby applicaiton with extracts the installer disk image from the installer application to for use as a boot disk for your virtualization software.
Run iesd -i /Applications/Install OS X Mavericks.app -o Mavericks.dmg -t BaseSystem
Now you’ll have a Mavericks.dmg inside your user’s home folder.
Now we’ll attach this disk image to our virtual machineClick on the “Storage” text of this new machineClick on the “Empty” list itemClick on the CD icon to “Choose A Virtual CD/DVD Disk File…”Choose the Mavericks.dmg file that iesd produced in your home folderNow we’re set to install Mavericks within the VM!
Wait for the VM to boot. You’ll see plenty of black on white text scroll by with some errors and warnings, but they are acceptable.And we’ve booted!
The mouse will be very laggy on this screen because of the animation, so it may be easier to hit the “Enter” key than to navigate to the next button with the mouse.
Before continuing with the installer, we need to format the blank disk so that the installer detects it as an install location.Go to “Utilities” -> “Disk Utility…” to launch the Disk UtilitySelect the “VBOX” disk and go to the “Erase” tab. We’ve successfully installed Mavericks. Lets take a snapshot of the machine at this point in case we ever want to reset back to the big bang.

From here, you’re good to go to start the virtual machine again and continue with the installer. I’d recommend taking another snapshot after you’ve set up the virtual machine so that you have another checkpoint to restore to.
A couple caveats here and also here (under “Mac OS X guests”). There aren’t any Virtualbox Guest Additions for OS X and the default resolution of the machine is 1024×768.
From the VirtualBox documentation, it is possible to set higher resolutions with VBoxManage setextradata ’VM name’ VBoxInternal2/EfiGopMode N where N values of 0-5 correspond with 0=640×480, 1=800×600, 2=1024×768, 3=1280×1024, 4=1440×900, 5=1920×1200

So, you’ve decided to download an older version of Mac OS X. There are many reasons that could point you to this radical decision. To begin with, some of your apps may not be working properly (or simply crash) on newer operating systems. Also, you may have noticed your Mac’s performance went down right after the last update. Finally, if you want to run a parallel copy of Mac OS X on a virtual machine, you too will need a working installation file of an older Mac OS X. Given your Mac isn’t new and is filled with data, you will probably need enough free space on your Mac. This includes not just space for the OS itself but also space for other applications and your user data. One more argument is that the free space on your disk translates into virtual memory so your apps have “fuel” to operate on. The chart below tells you how much free space is needed.
Note, that it is recommended that you install OS on a clean drive. Next, you will need enough disk space available, for example, to create Recovery Partition. Here are some ideas to free up space on your drive:
*Uninstall large unused apps
*Empty Trash Bin and Downloads
*Locate the biggest files on your computer:

Normally, it is assumed that updating OS is a one-way road. That’s why going back to a past Apple OS version is problematic. The main challenge is to download the OS installation file itself, because your Mac may already be running a newer version. If you succeed in downloading the OS installation, your next step is to create a bootable USB or DVD and then reinstall the OS on your computer.How to download older Mac OS X versions via the App Store
If you once had purchased an old version of Mac OS X from the App Store, open it and go to the Purchased tab. There you’ll find all the installers you can download. However, it doesn’t always work that way. The purchased section lists only those operating systems that you had downloaded in the past. But here is the path to check it:

*Click Purchases in the top menu.
*Scroll down to find the preferred OS X version.
*Click Download.

If you are signed with an Apple Developer account, you can get access to products that are no longer listed on the App Store. If you desperately need a lower OS X version build, consider creating a new Developer account among other options. Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you visit developer.apple.com/downloads, you can only find 10.3-10.6 OS X operating systems there. If you have a newer Mac, there is no physical option to install Mac OS versions older than your current Mac model. For instance, if your MacBook was released in 2014, don’t expect it to run any OS released prior of that time, because older Apple OS versions simply do not include hardware drivers for your Mac.
But as it often happens, workarounds are possible. There is still a chance to download the installation file if you have an access to a Mac (or virtual machine) running that operating system. For example, to get an installer for Lion, you may ask a friend who has Lion-operated Mac or, once again, set up a virtual machine running Lion. Then you will need to prepare an external drive to download the installation file using OS X Utilities.
After you’ve completed the download, the installer should launch automatically, but you can click Cancel and copy the file you need. Below is the detailed instruction how to do it.STEP 3. Install older OS X onto an external drive
The following method allows you to download Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks.
*Start your Mac holding down Command + R.
*Prepare a clean external drive (at least 10 GB of storage).
*Within OS X Utilities, choose Reinstall OS X.
*Select external drive as a source.
*Enter your Apple ID.
Now the OS should start downloading automatically onto the external drive. After the download is complete, your Mac will prompt you to do a restart, but at this point, you should completely shut it down. Now that the installation file is “captured” onto your external drive, you can reinstall the OS, this time running the file on your Mac.
*Boot your Mac from your standard drive.
*Connect the external drive.
*Go to external drive > OS X Install Data.

Recently, I found out some of my web pages didn’t look so great on Apple devices, so I picked up a late 2014 Mac Mini so I could have a device running Safari natively. Unfortunately, after upgrading it to the latest version of macOS, it was almost too sluggish to use. So started a long, misguided journey to carry out one of the few upgrades available for this particular model of the Mini — adding a PCIe SSD.
Note that had I done a little more research before starting this adventure, I could have avoided a bunch of headaches. If your planning on doing a project like this but haven’t bought any hardware yet, please skip to my rant at the end of the article for some shopping advice. But if you have found yourself in possession of some components that aren’t playing nice together, read on.Table of Contents
*Making a new partitionHardware
The first sign that I was going to run into trouble was how smooth the hardware installation went. One of the reasons I chose to add an M.2 drive instead of replacing the spinny 2.5″ disk with an SSD, is that doing the latter seemed like a real pain on this model of Mini. Adding an M.2, on the other hand, was accomplished in just a few steps. I started out with this adapter that I found on my local version of eBay:
Things were looking good. The model number of my Mini is A1347, and it say[s] right there “this adapter only fit 2014 A1347…”. This is what it looks like after I installed the hard drive that I chose based on its read/write speed vs price ratio (Crucial P1):
Installing the SSD assembly in the Mini is as simple as popping off the round black plastic bottom and removing six Torx screws. Carefully lift the edge of the metal cover that is furthest away from the WIFI antennae away from the case (the antennae wire is still attached).
Inside the case, you will see the PCIe plug as pointed out in the photo below by red arrows. Looking at the blue arrows, there is a hole to screw the SSD adapter to the case, but the hole in my adapter didn’t line up with it without some bending. Luckily, the foam on the bottom of my adapter included adhesive (green arrow).
With the new hard drive firmly stuck in place, it’s time to put the covers back on and take it for a test drive! This was so easy!Disk Utility doesn’t see the new drive
To see the new hard drive, click the Launchpad icon in your dock, and look for Disk Utility in the Other folder. Then click the view button in the upper-left-hand corner, and click devices.
If you see your new drive, congratulations! Your hard drive was probably one of the ones that are fully compatible with macOS. If you don’t see the drive, as it was in my case, don’t give up hope! Formatting the drive might get your Mini to see the new disk. All you need is a PC with a real operating system and an empty M.2 slot or an external M.2 enclosure. After you have found a way to connect the drive to a PC, you can follow the Windows instructions below or jump to instructions for Linux.Windows

There are several Windows apps out there that can format drives to an Apple file system, but I prefer to use the all-powerful and automatically installed Diskpart. To open Diskpart, first, open a command prompt by pressing Windows+R. Then open the command prompt with:
Press Enter. In the command prompt enter:
A dialog will pop up asking if you want this program to make changes to your computer. Say yes, then click yes and Diskpart will open in a new window. First, you need to find out the disk number of the new drive. This can be accomplished by entering:
You should see something like the following.
This next step is very important. If you don’t choose wisely, you might accidentally format the wrong disk, and lose your data, your OS, or maybe your will to live. If you aren’t sure which drive to use, you can eject the new drive, and run the previous command again to see which one disappeared. Once you are are sure you know which disk is the one you want to format it, select it with the following command. REPLACE THE # WITH THE CORRECT DISK NUMBER!
Sorry for yelling, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve blindly cut and paste commands from a tutorial and wondering why I get errors when I was supposed to replace bits of the command with my own info. Anyways, moving on. Now clean the disk and make a new partition with the following commands.
I’ve used Diskpart more than a few times in the past, but this was the first time I had seen the ‘id=af’ parameter. I Googled around a bit and didn’t find a clear explanation, except that whatever follows the id tag lays out block sizes, etc. I assume ‘af’ stands for Apple filesystem. Moving on. If there isn’t any smoke coming out of the back of your computer, check to see that the partition appears with the following.
And the partition should be listed.
Finally, select the partition, mark it active, and exit Diskpart.
At this point, you can eject the SSD or power off your PC and remove the drive, and move on to the next step.Linux
Usually, we carry out tasks with a shiny GUI in Windows, and terminal commands in Linux. However, for this project, I recommend the opposite. But don’t worry, the program of choice for making an Apple filesystem disk, GParted, isn’t included with every distro of Linux, so you might still be able to fire up that terminal! I’m running Ubuntu, and thus use the APT package manager. If you are using a different package manager, please change the following to match your system. First, if you haven’t checked for updates lately:
Then install GParted and the package that allows it to use the HFS+ format. HFS+ is not the latest Apple file system, but your Mini will recognize it and it is the most recent one that can be used by GParted. Run the following:
Then launch GParted from your application launcher or with the following command:
Yes, you must run it as sudo. That’s because if you make a wrong move you can really mess your system up. As long as you get the next step right, though, you won’t have any problems. In the drop-down menu at the top-right corner of GParted, select the disk you want to format.
Hopefully, you will be able to judge which one it is by its capacity and since this a new drive, it will show up as unallocated. It usually is the last one, but if you are not sure, eject the new drive and unplug it to make sure. Next, from the Device menu, select Create Partition Table.
Select mac as the partition table type. This is the point where you won’t be able to recover your system if you selected the incorrect hard drive, so cross your fingers and click Apply.
The thing about accidentally deleting your system partition is that your OS is loaded in RAM, and you can keep going for a while thinking everything is OK. I’m sure that didn’t happen to you. The next step is to create a new partition:
Select HFS+:
And apply changes by clicking:
And that’s it! After a short wait, your SSD is ready to be re-installed in your Mini.What now?
Hopefully, your new disk now shows up in Disk Utility. However, as indicated by the warning message about your Mini not being able to read the disk you may or may not have gotten, the disk is not ready to go yet.
I do have screenshots for this part, but I decided that because macOS is such an intuitive, user-friendly OS, I would save everyone’s bandwidth. All you need to do is open Disk Utility, right-click on the new hard drive (it should be a long string of numbers and letters, anything but ‘APPLE HDD’), and select Erase. Give the volume a new name and click Erase. After that finishes, you can right-click on the new volume and select Covert to APFS.
From here, the drive is ready to use as you see fit. If you want it to speed up your user experience though, you will have to move macOS to the new drive. The way to accomplish this will vary from user to user. In my case, I had just started using this machine, so a fresh install via USB installer was convenient. This Mac Mini was definitely an impulse buy for me. As I said at the top of the page, I needed something that could run Safari to view some web pages I had been working on, and not wanting to trust a simulator, I ran straight to Shopee (an Asian version of eBay) and bought the cheapest Mini I could find. All of the listings showed the CPU as being an i5, but none of them said which model of i5, but I said to myself, “Self, it’s an i5! It will have plenty of horsepower for what I want it for! Two cores minimum, running somewhere between 2.5ghz and 3.5ghz.”
The other thing I noticed is that the 2012 model of the Mini was selling for a slightly higher price. I didn’t notice it too hard to save thirty bucks though, and went ahead and ordered the 2014 model. After I upgraded it to Catalina (the latest version of Xcode wouldn’t run on High Sierra) and started a simulation of an iPhone, I noticed that everything was a little sluggish.
So, I opened a terminal checked the system resources with the following command:

The first thing I saw was all the stuck processes. I had never seen that before, not even on a Pi Zero. The second thing was the high load average. This i5 is a dual-core, so ideally I’d like to see a load of 2 or less. Weirdly, the CPU was barely doing work. It seems the bottleneck was being caused by a shortage of memory. Unfortunately, this RAM is not user-upgradable on this model of Mini. So, my only hope was to make the virtual memory faster. That’s when I decided to try and put an SSD in this cute little beast.
The 2012 model is fully upgradable! And it has a 2.5ghz i5! Sure, it is a third-generation chip instead of the 2014 model’s fourth-generation, but that is a pretty big difference in clock speed. But the ability as a user to add more RAM is the reason the 2012 model is still the winner for a cheap, second-hand Mac Mini.

How to install themes
Before we begin with the list, it’s important to understand how themes work on Ubuntu. For instance, changing the theme in Ubuntu changes 3 things.
*Icons – File Explorer icons, Launcher icons, etc
*GTK – Looks of an app window
*Shell – Top bar, desktop notifications, activity overview, etc.
There are 3 basic ways to install a theme. You can either install it via the terminal or as a deb package. Additionally, few themes are available as archive files. You can download the archive files and transfer the icons and themes to “~/.icons” and “~/.themes” directory respectively.
In order to change themes, you would need to install the “gnome-tweaks” package and User Themes extension.
To completely apply a theme on your desktop, you have to change the 3 following options in GNOME tweaks.

Arc Theme is the most popular theme for Ubuntu. It provides 3 different looks – Arc, Arc-Darker, Arc-Dark. I really liked the Arc-Darker theme which is a mix and match of the dark and light theme. Arc-Dark isn’t exactly black but a darker shade of Navy Blue. It doesn’t work well on the GNOME shell and leaves the calendar in a white patch. Additionally, you don’t get an icon pack with it, so you would have to rely on third-party icon packs.
If you are someone who prefers the light theme instead of dark, Arc Theme is a good option.
Installation Command:2. Pop
I recently moved back to Ubuntu from PopOS and I carried back the theme with me. The icons, shell, wallpapers are too good to leave. You can download the wallpapers from this link. I prefer the PopOS dark mode over Yaru and the shell is much refined. For instance, the notifications stacked up have much more padding between them.
Unlike Arc, the Pop theme is continuously updated due to the PopOS.
Installation Command:3. McMojave
McMojave is the exact theme if you crave for that macOS look. In order to install McMojave, you would have to download the archive from the link below, extract it and then move it to the “~/.themes” directory. Once done, restart GNOME by giving an Alt+F2, type r, and hit Enter.
To complement McMojave, you would need the “La Capitaine” icon theme. Similar to McMojave, you would need to download, extract the archive, and move it to the “~/.icons” directory. Once done, choose the icon theme and you would have Mojave-style icon packs. Additionally, you can download the Mojave OS wallpapers for the final touch.

Download McMojave & La Capitaine Icon4. Materia
Materia is another popular theme for Ubuntu. I liked the Materia-dark-compact theme which makes the Windows Titlebars pretty concise. Another small nuance is the ripple effect. In Materia, if you click on a button or an option, it gives a subtle ripple effect on the selected area.
Installation Command:5. Vimix
Vimix Theme is based on the popular Materia theme. You would have to download both the archive files for the Vimix theme and the Vimix icon pack. Next, you just have to extract and run the “install.sh” script file in the terminal.
Vimix, unlike other themes, provides a huge number of options. You have approximately 15+ themes ranging from teal to ruby, beryl, etc. I liked the nuances in the Vimix theme. For instance, when you hover past the dropdown menus, there’s a shadow trail giving you the feel of motion blur. I did like that!
Download Vimix Theme & Vimix Icon Pack6. Ant
Ant is a plain flat theme for Ubuntu 20.04. In case you are more into the light theme, Ant is a fantastic theme to go by. Ant only supports GTK and GNOME shell. Hence, you might have to go with a third-party icon pack. I loved the blood accent on the white theme.
Download Ant7. Sweet
Sweet is the fanciest theme in this list. Rock with it with an icon pack like Candy or Luv and you would have a colorful desktop to look at. I loved the neon-pink accent to the Sweet dark theme. Apart from that, you get a Sweet (light) and Sweet Mars theme. Similar to McMojave, you would have to download and move the extracted archive to the “~/.themes” directory.
Download Sweet8. Cloudy
Cloudy is a good GTK theme sitting right in between the light and dark themes. It has 8 different variants that provide a combination of dark, light theme with blue and brown accents. I like that it draws a line between the icons and file-labels to make it look like a 3-pane window.
Although Cloudy does have a shell theme, it’s showing its age. It doesn’t look good with the DND and calendar on the notification shade. You’d be better of using the default Yaru shell.
Installation Command:9. Nordic
Nordic is a minimal dark theme based on the Nord color palette. You can complement it with a blue color icon theme and a white flashy background for a minimal look.
Download Nordic Theme10. Layan
Layan is an interesting take to Ubuntu themes. It turns every sharp corner on the desktop to rounded corners. Although Layan has options for both dark and light themes, I particularly liked the light theme more. Similar to Materia, you get a ripple effect when you click on an option.
Installation command:11. Flat Remix GNOME
Flat Remix GNOME is a gorgeous looking theme with its own icon pack, GTK, GNOME shell theme, and wallpapers. You have a lot to choose from. I really liked the Flat-Remix-Miami theme. It brings a lot of subtle yet poppy colors to the shell. Another subtle change is that the theme makes the Topbar transparent. This really makes your desktop look slightly bigger. The theme also adds extra drop-shadow to the windows and dropdowns.
Installation command:12. Adapta
Adapta is another popular theme for GNOME desktops. You can directly install it from the Ubuntu store or apt repository. The theme is being regularly updated but the GNOME shell theme’s a bit wonky. Similar to Arc, it left a white patch on the calendar in the notification shade. However, you can still combine it with the default Ubuntu GNOME shell theme and it’s good to go.
Installation Command:13. Lumiere
Similar to Ant, Lumiere is a fantastic light theme. I could find a GitHub repo with a whole bunch of different themes. It also has a dark edition called Fantome. You can clone the repo and see what suits your need. The themes don’t have a shell and icon theme. So, you would be better of going with Yaru as shell and Yaru icon pack.

One of the great advantages of using Ubuntu is the fact it there are enough desktop environments for everyone to choose from like Unity, Cinnamon etc. The desktop environments change the entire look of the software interface, gives it uniqueness and style.
The GNOME shell is one of the most popular desktop environments available out there. You can carryout basic functions such as launching applications, switching between windows and using a widget engine. All in all, the GNOME shell is pretty simple but very functional.Ubuntu Mac Os Theme
As simple as the GNOME shell may be, it supports theme customization and that‘s exactly what we are going to do as we would attempt turning this seemingly simple design into that of the Mac OS.
If you already have the GNOME shell and the GNOME Tweak Tool installed on your machine, you can skip the remaining part of this section.
The shell can be installed using the terminal command below:
During installation, a prompt may come up asking you to choose the display manager, simply choose the ‘lightdm‘ option.
The installation is complete now, however making customizations to the shell at this point could still be a pain in the neck.
For this reason, there is a tweak tool that allows for easy customization of the GNOME desktop environment, named the GNOME Tweak Tool.

You shouldn‘t expect an instant change in the environment just yet. To access the new desktop environment, you should log out of the current desktop session or better still do a reboot.

Now that the GNOME desktop environment has been installed, getting a suitable Mac OS theme is next on the agenda.
There are lots of themes out there however, the theme of our choice is the GNOME OS X II GTK theme. This may not be a perfect replica of the Mac OS X, however it is one of the best.
This theme requires ubuntu 16.10 and above. If you use a version below there is an alternative which is the macOS Sierra GTK theme, it exists on github so you would have to clone the project.
To install the theme, simply extract the theme folder into the ~/.themes folder. This folder exists in the home directory, if you can‘t find it you should select the option to show hidden files.
After extracting the theme into that folder, open the GNOME Tweak Tool then select the Appearance section. There you would find the theme, and select it.
Now you should get a feel of the Mac OS, however the icons do not yet look the Mac. Keep calm, that would be tackled soon.Getting a Mac OS desktop dock
Desktop docks always bring a different sort of flavour to any desktop environment. A dock such as the default Ubuntu desktop dock has gained lots of popularity as much as the Mac OS desktop dock.
To replicate this, we would be using the Plank desktop dock. This is because it is lightweight and comes close to giving the needed Mac OS dock look.

Let‘s give the icons a touch of the Mac OS.Getting a Mac OS icon set
One of the most unique things about the Mac OS is its icon set. Its very simple but has a classic design and is one of the best icon sets you would ever find.
Luckily for us, we can easily install this using the La Captaine pack.
After download, you should extract the icons folder into the ~/.icons folder. This folder should be present at the home folder, if you can‘t find it then it is hidden you should set the file manager to display hidden files.
After extracting the files there, then from the GNOME tweak tools you can select the icon pack from the appearance section.Choosing a Mac style system font
Font styles are of great importance in designs. They could be the subtle difference between very beautiful and not quite for any interface.
As with all Apple products, fonts are taken very seriously and this has ensured that the already beautiful design becomes much more classy.
